Mother's Day: What It Means to Be a Mother
Being a mother—a connection, a challenge, a duty, and a sacrifice that can hardly be compared to anything else in the world. It means holding together all the branches of a family like a trunk, being a home, a safe harbor. At the same time, it also means teaching your children to fly, giving them that small but crucial push out of the nest. Yet always being ready to catch them again. Being a mother means having the most important job in the world while simultaneously doing a hundred other jobs. Whether as a private chauffeur, cook, or hobby therapist—when it comes to their children, mothers are simply unbeatable, unwavering, and indispensable!
Motherhood is Diverse: There Are Many Types of Mothers
Motherhood stands for loving another being from the bottom of your heart—even without blood ties. Many people find this unfiltered love in the loyal eyes of a dog. Raising a four-legged friend is not only a good preparation for life with your own children, but it also gives you an idea of what it means to love unconditionally and to be loved. On this Mother's Day, I at William Walker want to celebrate not only all the wonderful mothers in the world but also highlight what it really means to be a dog mom.
A True Story for Mother's Day - The Day I Became a Dog Mom
And suddenly, he was there: head first and weighing 383 grams, he came into the world and into my life. It was the day my dog El Carlos was born, and he made me a dog mom forever. With him came great joy and a lot of chaos. Not only did I have to change, work on myself, and push my limits, but my surroundings also needed a complete overhaul. Things that had previously been commonplace in my apartment suddenly became hazards. Houseplants, open stairs, cables, and medications had to be sorted, banished, or made puppy-proof. I learned just how important storage space and order are after the first pair of chewed high heels I left lying around.
The Worries of Mothers
But broken shoes were nothing compared to the other challenges that my new dog mom life presented. Because being a mother also means living with worry. Jean Jacques Rousseau once summed it up very aptly:
“Being a mother means hearing little breaths and soft heartbeats, becoming sharp-eyed like a forest animal for all dangers, being quietly courageous like no loud man in arms, creating with all the blood one has, growing beyond oneself in all the abilities of waking, starving, loving, and acting, but above all, worrying. Being a mother means being happy in worries.”
With love and a sense of responsibility, the protective instinct grows automatically. When my dog had a terrible accident while playing and needed emergency surgery, I learned for the first time what it meant to be in a panic of worry. Thankfully, El Carlos recovered completely, but for a while, the feeling of worry was my constant companion. What remains from life as a dog mom is surely one or two small worry, stress, or even frown lines on my face and a pile of high vet bills.
Dogs Are the Best Icebreakers
Even more than the bad experiences, I was shaped by the many beautiful experiences as a dog mom. Because not only does the company of a loyal four-legged friend ensure that one never feels alone, but the dog is a true icebreaker when it comes to making acquaintances. As a dog owner, you will sooner or later become a professional small talker. Because one thing we dog parents all have in common: we love to talk about our dogs and exchange stories about all the happenings in a dog’s life.
A Dog Radiates Childlike Joy
A wagging tail brings happiness on four paws. The world, sometimes a dull everyday life, suddenly becomes colorful, less lonely, and varied through the childlike joy of the dog. Errands become excursions, a simple day at the beach turns into a moment of happiness—or as we call it at William Walker: a #wwmoment. The ease and naturalness with which dogs live and love are contagious, and petting their soft fur has been shown to have a calming, soothing effect on humans. As a dog mom, I have learned that sometimes there’s nothing better than switching off and trying to see the world through the eyes of my best four-legged friend.
I Will Follow You - My Dog, My Constant Companion
But alongside the ease and joy of life, my dog has also given my life more structure. Whether it’s bad weather, the hangover after a night out, or heartbreak—the dog needs to go out, and I have to go too! The new energy I often gained from fresh air, movement, and the joy in my dog’s eyes saved many a nearly wasted day. However, as a dog mom, a day spent in bed or on the sofa is never a wasted one if spent with your dog. Because there’s hardly anyone you can cuddle with as well as with your beloved furry friend.
The fact is: my dog has completely turned my life upside down. But in the most beautiful way. I can no longer be as free and spontaneous as I once was. But I am never alone and have a companion for whom no journey is too long— as long as we are together. The American pet photographer Roger Andrew once said it very aptly: “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
